Mexican actress and television host Inés Gómez Mont was arrested on Friday, Oct. 30, in Miami, Florida. Mexico's attorney general's office (FGR) confirmed the arrest, saying the warrant behind it accuses her of what Mexican law calls equivalent tax fraud (defraudación fiscal equiparada).
According to the FGR's criminal police, the arrest followed an exchange of information with the United States. The warrant, dated June 29, 2023, has not yet been formally registered, they said.
A photo obtained by El Universal and shared on social media shows Gómez Mont in handcuffs and chains. Two U.S. police officers hold her by the arms.
Extradition, deportation or neither?
It is not clear whether the arrest rests on an extradition request or on immigration law. U.S. authorities had not commented at first, EFE reported. According to Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, the U.S. turned down Mexico's extradition request in May against Gómez Mont's husband, Víctor Á., because the alleged offenses are not violent crimes.
Journalist Luis Chaparro, cited by Milenio, said deportation is also possible alongside extradition. He said an immigration case against Gómez Mont is pending in the U.S.
Allegations of fake invoices
In September 2021, the FGR obtained a first arrest warrant from a federal judge. She is alleged to have used shell companies to launder money. Prosecutors accuse her of falsifying invoices after the Interior Ministry (Segob), under former President Enrique Peña Nieto, awarded contracts without a bidding process to her husband, Víctor Á.
The tax fraud allegation involves 6.6 million pesos: Gómez Mont is accused of not paying income tax for the 2015 tax year. According to El Universal, the second warrant, against which she sought an amparo in 2024, dates from 2021. In July 2024, she sought legal protection (an amparo) against that warrant, and a federal judge denied it. A collegiate court has since agreed to review her appeal of that ruling.
Sheinbaum called the couple "criminals"
On Sept. 30, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called Gómez Mont and her husband "known invoice forgers" and "criminals." She spoke after Interpol lifted its international Red Notice against both. Sheinbaum said there was "every conceivable piece of evidence" that the two, as business owners, issued false invoices to avoid paying taxes.
On Oct. 8, Sheinbaum said Mexico's government had asked Interpol to reinstate the notice.
According to EFE, Víctor Á. was arrested in Miami in September 2025. His next hearing is set for November.
